Matthew Rampley is speaking on 10 October at a conference at the University of Vienna: Austria-Hungary in the Global Colonial System

Histories of Czech culture and society have tended to dwell on the fact that Czechs themselves were the subjects (even colonial subjects) of the Habsburg Empire. However, Matthew’s lecture will emphasize the fact that although they were not conquerors of overseas territories, many Czechs, as explorers, as administrators, as scientists and as technical experts were often implicated in the system of colonial rule. As Czechs, too, they benefitted from the fact that they were the citizens of a major European power and, when travelling around the globe, enjoyed a privileged position.
